Building a custom home with personal design requires you to make a lot of selections from the home’s exterior paint colors, trim molding, flooring,
cabinetry, lighting fixtures and more. Having the most successful outcome for your custom home requires you to be able to share with your builder your
selections for you home in a timely manner.
For example, in order for the builder to put your floors and cabinets into your custom home it is important that you make your necessary selections for
your windows. In order to install your bathroom fixtures it would be necessary to select the tiling for your shower.
You get the picture.
So how can you make this process smoother for the best outcome possible for your custom home design?
Research, Research, Research
With sites like Pinterest and Houzz you can discover a whole new world of options for your home. Take some time and browse through kitchens, baths, and
living spaces. Take note of what literally makes you happy and what you could envision in your new custom home. Collect pictures that reflect the feeling
you are going for in your home. At this stage don’t worry about logistics focus on your feelings.
Find Inspiration Around You
Use your mobile phone to take pictures of houses that you see that strike your fancy while driving around. Take snapshots of color inspirations from clothing,
nature or paintings that you find to be inspiring.
Next think about common elements that you see in the pictures that you have collected. Perhaps you notice that you like ceiling to floor windows or hardwood
floors and white cabinets. Maybe you see that you liked a relaxed and open floor plan. Start to take a closer look and edit the phots that after more
scrutiny, don’t speak to you anymore. If you notice that there are contradictory elements then you know it’s time to make a decision on which one will
work better for you.
Think About Your Lifestyle
In order to make better decisions think about your current lifestyle. Do you have elderly parents living with you and a first floor master suite is necessary?
Do you have pets and need to install pet friendly spaces in your home. Do you entertain a lot and need a larger kitchen with a hearth room? Keeping
these things in mind will help you when making decisions for your selections.
Spending time to understand your life, your style and what type of feeling you want in your home will help you in making selections for your custom home
and help you to have a more satisfying experience.
