How big should you build your new home? If you're unsure, here are some helpful thoughts on how to decide. And don't forget, Custom Builders Indianapolis can help you decide on the right additions.
Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when determining the size of your home is how long you plan to live there. From there, you should consider your life goals and expectations you have for the duration of time. Here is a short list of things that will help you determine what size home to build.
•hobbies & work
Budget. Your budget, of course, is a large factor in this decision. Be sure to tell your builder your budget upfront so they are able to help you make informed decisions. After making a list of what you want in a custom home, you may find it's worth exceeding your budget a bit in order to get the exact home you envision (like including that walk-in closet you've always dreamed of). On the reverse, you may find you want to prioritize and make some eliminations and go with a bit smaller of a home in order to stay within your budget.
Family Size. Obviously, if you have a large family or plans to grow your family, you'll want to consider having a larger home. Can you imagine trying to share a bathroom with your spouse, 3 children, and mother-in-law? What about having to do laundry for a large family? Plan to build an amazing laundry room to make it easier to maintain continuous laundry. Also, keep in mind that even if you are at the place in your life where you're a family of 2 (and don't plan on growing) it's good to leave room for the unexpected.
Guests. For example, remember that time your cousin called and told you that she, her husband, two kids, and dog were going to visit in a week? It would have been nice to have had additional space to adequately accommodate everyone. You should also keep in mind how much you plan to entertain guests. Have you always wanted to be able to host family holiday gatherings, sports viewing parties, summer cookouts, etc.? Build big; make room for your guests!
Hobbies & Work. You may also want to consider a larger home so you can have that craft room, wood shop, music room, or office space you've always wanted. Think of your passions and what you spend the bulk of your time doing. How can your home allow you to manage and enjoy those things?Ask your builder about options!
