What to Look For In A Custom Home Floor Plan

So, you’re ready to build a custom home. Where do you start? With the drawing board. One of the best places to get started is by looking at different custom home floor plan ideas. These floor plans may not be exactly what you’re looking for, but the benefit of building a custom home is that the floor plan can be modified to fit your needs and desires.

Before you get started looking at different floor plans, be sure you know what to look for:

1. Enough space for your entire family.

Does your family have 2 people or 12 people in it? Are you expecting your family to grow, stay the same, or shrink? You need a floor plan that accommodates for the size of your family now and in the future. Think about how many bedrooms you’ll need, the size of dining room that will fit your whole family, and how big your living room needs to be to accommodate everyone.

2. The number of levels you want.

It may not seem quite as important of a feature for your custom home floor plan, but you need to consider how many floors you want. A typical ranch home only has one floor, but you could add a lower level to increase the size of your home. Or, if you prefer building up, you could add a second or even third level to the home to increase the size and space available.

3. The ability to add features down the road.

One thing you’ll definitely want to look for in a custom home floor plan is the flexibility it affords you and your custom home builder. You will undoubtedly want to add features and custom elements during the initial build, but you’ll also probably want to make updates later in life. Finding a floor plan that allows you to do both things is incredibly important.

4. A design that fits your preferences and lifestyle.

Are you more into colonial or craftsman? Want a ranch or a bungalow? Custom home floor plans come in all kinds of different designs and styles. Before you decide on a floor plan, it’s important you know what design and style you like. You don’t want to pick out a craftsman floor plan only to realize you actually hate the way craftsman homes look.

5. A design that fits your budget.

Floor plan designs fit a huge variety of budgets. It’s sometimes difficult for a homeowner to understand how a floor plan translates into an actual home. A custom home builder can give you a basic estimate based on a floor plan, but you have to consider your budget while you’re looking at different floor plans. For example, adding that lower level or a third level is going to cost more than keeping the home to one or two levels.
